Set in the beautiful Sierra del Bermeja mountain region 517 metres above sea level is the village of Genalguacil (voted the most attractive white village in Andalucia) which has approximately 300 inhabitants. The surrounding area is a paradise for people who appreciate nature as the area is a designated Natural Park. It is one of the best-preserved areas in Europe and contains forests of Spanish Fir, Chestnut, Cork Oak trees, citrus groves and the rare pinsapos trees.

Many animals such as wild deer and boar can be seen in these forests where the crystal clear waters of the Almacher and Genal rivers flow. The area is also a bird watchers and walkers paradise with such birds as the griffin vulture and the kingfisher.

Throughout the village, there are many works of art such as stone sculptures, woodcarvings, ceramics, clay models and iron works. Every two years artists are hosted and their works are donated to the village. This makes the village unique as an open-air art museum.

The village has three small supermarkets, where fresh local food, wine and household goods can be purchased. There is also a bakery where you can buy your fresh bread daily, a bank and a pharmacy. Fresh fish is delivered regularly by van throughout the week and there is a small weekly market selling everything from clothes and bedding to spices and flowers.

There is a large municipal swimming pool located near the entrance to the village which is open during the school summer holidays, the locals however prefer to wander down to the lower valley to enjoy the crystal clear waters of the river.
